Experience the Scenic Views of Zoo-De-Mack

As one of the most scenic bicycle rides in the region, Zoo-De-Mack invites riders on a leisurely journey along the stunning shores of Lake Michigan, through the Tunnel of Trees on M-119, the rolling countryside, trillium forests, and the vibrant communities along the way. Mile 1 begins at The Highlands and continues 51 miles to Mackinaw City.

Bike Ride Prep

You never know what northern Michigan will bring! One area will have blue skies and sunshine, and the next will have rain. Prepare for it all with layers and a raincoat. Bring a backpack to store extra layers (and snacks) and a rain cover for your bag if it rains. Lunchtime is a great time to swap out a sweaty layer for a clean one, and again at the end of the ride. Nothing is better than a dry shirt while sitting in the fresh air and enjoying a cold beverage. Be sure to have extra room in your backpack for a souvenir or two from the Good Hart General Store.

Remember, pack a fix-it kit! Race cars drive by to help, but you always see a few flat tires out there, so prep ahead and be prepared. It is also wise to bring a mosquito net to wear over your head. Near the shores, the mayflies can get pretty bad in May, and no one wants to swallow a bug accidentally. Thankfully, you only need to watch out for mayflies in one section along Lake Michigan.

What Sets Zoo-De-Mack Apart

Zoo-De-Mack is for seasoned bike riders and leisure bikers who want to feel like they are out on a Sunday stroll. This is a time to ride with friends, bring the kids (we recommend ages 13+ as the ride is long and hilly), and get the crew together to enjoy the scenic route and all the fun stops along the way. There are so many quaint little towns in northern Michigan to stop, rest, and explore.

This is a great event for starting a new yearly tradition because you can take the ride at your own pace—be it all the way through in one go or stopping here and there. Finishing a 51-mile ride is quite an accomplishment, no matter the pace!

The Complete Zoo-De-Mack Package

There is a cost to participate in the Zoo-De-Mack ride, but it comes with so many fun activities, food, and good times.

Friday night begins with the annual pre-ride bash at The Highlands. Gather with fellow riders for live music, games, and free swag.

At approximately halfway point on Saturday, riders will stop at Legs Inn for lunch. The historic Legs Inn is unique and akin to stepping into an old fairy tale. They offer scenic outdoor garden dining spots overlooking the lake, and the restaurant is stone on the outside with hand-crafted wood on the inside. It is a really neat spot and always worth the stop.

After you finally cross the finish line, attend the post-ride bash at The Crossing in Mackinaw City, which will feature live entertainment, a cash bar, and food vendors. This is outdoors and is a good time to change into fresh layers, sit back, and listen to some music while enjoying a few drinks.

Afterward, you can use your ferry ticket received in the Zoo-De-Mack package to explore Mackinac Island and hit up the evening parties at The Gatehouse, Pink Pony, and Horns with incredible live bands. You can take a shuttle from Mackinaw City to The Highlands for a separate cost. This will allow you to get back to your car or stay overnight at The Highlands to relax, unwind, and take a dip in the heated outdoor pool. Or attend the Zoo Bar Cantina post-party to celebrate riding 51 miles! Enjoy food specials and good times.
