Day Trip: Explore the Tunnel of Trees
A bucket list northern Michigan adventure
It is no secret that the Tunnel of Trees is a must-see adventure in northern Michigan- especially during fall. The dappled sunlight peeking through the trees, glimpses of Lake Michigan, and all the fun stops make this trip a Pure Michigan bucket list item.

Stop 1 - Downtown Harbor Springs
Less than 10 minutes from The Highlands, downtown Harbor Springs is full of quaint shops, interesting stops, and waterfront views. Main Street looks like it is the set of a Hallmark movie. Take your time meandering around, walk down to the marina to watch the boats, and stop by the park for some beach time.

Stop 2 - Thorne Swift Nature Preserve
Just a few miles from Harbor Springs is Thorne Swift Nature Preserve. This preserve features a network of easy walking trails that lead to a Lake Michigan beach. Enjoy a leisurely walk along the perimeter (about 1 mile) or take the shortcut directly to the beach.
There is also a nature center that offers seasonal guided programs.

Stop 3 - Pond Hill Farm
Right off M119 (The Tunnel of Trees) is a northern Michigan treasure, Pond Hill Farm. With 200 acres to explore, there is something to explore and discover around every corner. We suggest saying hello to the goats and donkeys first. Then head over to their market/cafe to sample wine and beer, or grab a warm drink and head over to the playground for some family-friendly fun.

Stop 4 - Good Hart
Looking like it did back in the 1930s, stands the adorable Good Hart General Store. This store has a little of everything - from souvenirs to sandwiches and baked goods. Right next to the store is a studio and a coffee/tea shop.

Stop 5 - Cross Village
The final destination in the Tunnel of Trees heritage trail is Cross Village. Explore the nearby nature preserves, take a walk along the shoreline of Lake Michigan, stop by the infamous Legs Inn, or grab some homemade pasta from Black Barn Farm.
