Fall Colors Itinerary
Fall in northern Michigan is a Michigan thing! We can feel the seasons change and embrace it.
The crisp breeze tempered with warm sunshine makes for the best adventure weather. With The Highlands in the heart of it all, plan your perfect fall getaway with these must-see places.
Start the Day
Begin the day with a slow drive on M119, or as we like to call it, the Tunnel of Trees. This meandering road offers views of Lake Michigan peaking through the trees, stopping spots for a quick hike, and a hidden away tea/coffee house. The true show stopper is the brilliant colors creating a tunnel of golds, reds, and bright oranges. There is a reason the Tunnel of Trees hits every must-do fall adventure list- it is stunning!
Pumpkin Picking and Animal Friends
Be sure to stop at Pond Hill Farm on your exploration of the Tunnel of Trees. There is fun for kids and adults alike with a produce store, cafe, winery, brewery, and adorable animals. Grab a pumpkin or two to carve later and snap a pic with their giant pumpkin display.
Apple Picking
It is not fall without Michigan apples! Uncle Frank's Apple Town has it all from apples, freshly pressed cider, and the best cinnamon sugar doughnuts! Take a hay ride through the 50 acres farm and say hello to Brutus- a giant dinosaur statue made of hay!
Scenic Chairlift Rides and a Mountaintop Hike
The Tunnel of Trees lets you take a peek into the canopy of colors, but a scenic chairlift ride gives you a bird's eye view of the valley. Take in the captivating view and stroll over to the overlook at the top for a view of Lake Michigan. Round out the scenic experience with a stroll down Upper Camelot back to the lodge.
NOTE: temporarily suspended. We hope to be back up soon!
Fall Hike
Hiking up the slope is great fun, but the best views are with a quiet stroll towards Alpine Village. The tree canopy cascades over the paved road and you can really enjoy the brilliant red leaves that are dominating our woodland forests. For a real treat, take a quick 5-minute hike up North Peak to see the valley in its colorful splendor! If the day is really clear, you can even have a peek at the Mackinac Bridge.
Woodland Trail Ride
Finish out your perfect northern Michigan fall day by experiencing the woodland backdrop of The Highlands. Take a tranquil horseback ride throughout our stunning network of trails and see The Highlands from a whole new perspective.
From season to season, The Highlands creates lasting memories. Create your new favorite fall memory and discover the beauty of northern Michigan!
